The name Enchey Monastery comes from the Tibetan phrase for "the solitary temple." Buddhists consider this place holy and visit it to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings in Gangtok. The stunning view of the Kanchenjunga Hills, the tall pine trees, and the flowery fields make the followers feel like they are in a peaceful and blessed place.

This monastery is about 200 years old and is 3 km northeast of Gangtok. According to history, Lama Druptob Karpo, a famous yogi who could fly, flew down to Maenam Hill and built a monastery there. Sidkeong Tulku later restored it in the style of a Chinese pagoda.

Why is Enchey Monastery famous?

Enchey Monastery is well-known for its long past, spiritual importance, and beautiful building. Both travellers and visitors like to go there, which makes it one of the best places to visit in Gangtok for its calm atmosphere.

The Significance of Enchey Monastery

At the moment, 90 monks live in this holy temple, which honours Loki Sharia, Lord Buddha, and Guru Padmasambhava. Inside Enchey Monastery, there is a huge prayer hall with a metal roof that is full of pictures of Gods, Goddesses, and Tantric figures. There is a wheel of law on the porch that moves in time with the monks' prayers.

The Enchey Monastery is also a popular visiting place due to the Chaam dance. This dance is a specific prayer offered by masked monks. It is performed on the 18th and 19th days of the 12th month of the Tibetan calendar.

Pang Lhabsol is a holiday at the monastery that unites Bhutias and Lepchas in the way that they have to swear being blood brothers, all with Khangchendzonga as the witness. It is one place you will be looking forward to visiting for some knowledge of the history and culture of monks. It presents an odd silent haven away from the hustle of city life.

The best time to visit

Each year, in September and October, the Detor Cham event is held, and you can take part in it. The well-known Monk Cham Dance can be seen at this event. In addition, Enchey Monastery is at a high elevation, which makes it hard to get to in the winter and when it rains a lot. Many Gangtok tour packages include visits to this spiritual and cultural landmark.
