Nathula is a high mountain pass in the Himalayas that connects Sikkim, India, and China. It is one of the highest roads where vehicles can travel. Located on the Indo-Tibetan border at 14,450 feet above sea level, Nathu La is one of the key mountains passes in India and a must-see among places to visit in Gangtok.

Nathu means "listening ears," and La means "pass." Nathula is one of the three open trade border posts between India and China. It is known for its stunning scenery and lovely surroundings. The weather is usually low for most of the year, but it attracts many people in the summer.

The Historical and Military Importance of Nathula Pass

Nathula Pass, part of the Old Silk Route, links Sikkim to Tibet in China. It was closed for nearly forty years after China put down a Tibetan rebellion in 1959. In 2003, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee toured China, and discussions about opening this important path started again. The Nathula tourism Pass, as it stands today, was reopened in 2006 and has, ever since, acted as an official Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) stop. Go to Nathula Pass in Sikkim to discover its past.

Nathula is one of the three border posts open for trade between India and China and is important for trade between the two countries. It also reduces the distance between important Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage places, which helps the economy and improves ties with China.

Natural Beauty and Scenic Views at Nathula Pass

Every year, many people come here to hike in the valley and enjoy the beautiful scenery. There are several streams along the route from Gangtok to Nathu La. It also gives you a chance to see the beautiful snow-capped mountains around the area. The area is home to Himalayan animals such as Tibetan gazelles, snow leopards, yaks, and Tibetan wolves. Nathu La Pass has a wide variety of plants and amazing wildlife, making it a popular highlight of Gangtok tour packages.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to come is during the summer, from May to October. The weather is nice and provides a clear view of Tsomgo Lake and the impressive mountains. Nathula Pass is open for Indian people only on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. It is completely covered in snow during the winter, and the temperature can drop to -25 degrees Celsius. If you love snow, it's a good idea to wear warm cotton clothes to handle the cold weather.
