A fire damaged the convent in 1947, but repairs were completed later that same year. Heavy rain destroyed the building in 1983, but the government helped rebuild the monastery.

About 300 lamas from the Nyingmapa Buddhist order live at Phensang Monastery. During the Sikkimese New Year, all the monks perform a special dance in December.
