Historical and Religious Importance of Phensang Monastery

On his way to the Northern zone in 1721 A.D., the 3rd Lhatsun Jigmed Pawo built this temple. They rebuilt the monastery in 1840 to hold many monks. A fire damaged the convent in 1947, but repairs were completed later that same year. Heavy rain destroyed the building in 1983, but the government helped rebuild the monastery.

About 300 lamas from the Nyingmapa Buddhist order live at Phensang Monastery. During the Sikkimese New Year, all the monks perform a special dance in December.

The Architecture of Phensang Monastery

Phensang Monastery has a traditional Tibetan design, which includes wood crafts with great detail, bright paintings, and prayer flags. In the main prayer hall, figures of gods and old texts can be seen, showing the spiritual nature of the monastery.
