The famous Agra Fort is in the Indian city of Agra. Before 1638, when the capital moved from Agra to Delhi, it was where the rulers of the Mughal Dynasty lived most of the time. The Agra Fort is a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is about 2.5 km northwest of the Taj Mahal, its more famous sister building. A better way to describe the Fort is as a walled city. One of the PLACES TO VISIT IN AGRA is this one.

What is unique about Agra Fort?

Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its beautiful Mughal architecture and long history. It was built by Emperor Akbar, consisting of huge walls of red sandstone with intricate carvings and unique buildings that include Jahangir Palace and Diwan-i-Khas. Its strategic position allows it to view the Taj Mahal, adding importance. For this reason, the Fort was the most important place in terms of politics and war, and it still remains an indispensable icon nowadays in Agra. An AGRA TOUR PACKAGE is complete with the experience of this remarkable Fort.

Who built the Fort?

When Babur won the First Battle of Panipat in 1526, he stayed in the Fort, in Ibrahim Lodi's house. After that, he made a baoli in it. His son Humayun was named king in the Fort in 1530. In the year 1540, Sher Shah Suri beat him at Bilgram. The Suris held the Fort until 1555 when Humayun took it back. In 1556, Adil Shah Suri's general, Hemu, took back Agra and followed the city's running ruler to Delhi, where he met the Mughals in the Battle of Tughlaqabad. Akbar made Agra his capital when he realized its importance in the middle of everything. He got there in 1558. A scholar named Abul Fazl wrote that they had called this a brick fort "Badalgarh." It was destroyed, so Akbar had red sandstone from the Barauli area of Dhaulpur district in Rajasthan built over it. Architects laid the foundation and built the building with bricks on the inside and sandstone on the outside. It took about 4,000 builders eight years of daily work to finish in 1573.
