Emperor Shah Jahan built the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra. It's a building masterpiece and a sign of love that will last forever. And its romantic feel continues to attract people from all over the world.

The Taj is one of the world's most beautiful buildings and a must-see among the PLACES TO VISIT IN AGRA. Made entirely of white marble, it serves as the main building in a complex that also includes a mosque and a meeting hall.

Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan's beloved wife, died while giving birth, and her tomb is in the Taj Mahal in Agra. Shah Jahan's grave is also inside. This site is a highlight of any AGRA TOUR PACKAGE due to its stunning beauty, complex design, and high level of workmanship.

The history of Taj Mahal

After Mumtaz Mahal's death in 1631, Shah Jahan ordered the construction of the Taj Mahal. Her death left the emperor completely heartbroken. He cherished this land on the south side of Agra. It belonged to Raja Jai Singh I, who agreed to give it away. Thus, they laid the foundation of the Taj Mahal.

Construction of the Mahal began in 1632, and workers completed the main building by 1648. Workers completed the entire complex in 1653.

However, Shah Jahan couldn’t relish its beauty for long. His son Aurangzeb soon overthrew him and imprisoned him in Agra Fort. Shah Jahan was also limited to viewing his work via a window in the fort for the remainder of his life. In 1983, UNESCO designated the Agra Mahal as a World Heritage Site.

Thousands of workers from all across Central Asia and India constructed this monument.

Artisans from Europe designed the marble panels and worked with precious stones.

Who built the Mahal and why?

Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal. He commissioned the mausoleum in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. The structure represents Shah Jahan’s profound love and admiration for her, serving as a grand tribute to their bond.

What was the duration of construction for the Taj Mahal?

Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632 and took about 22 years to complete, finishing in 1653. The project involved thousands of artisans and workers, resulting in the creation of one of the world’s most renowned architectural masterpieces.
