History

One of the old buildings dedicated to Lord Shiva is the Mankameshwar Temple. According to Hindu legend, Lord Shiva made the Shiva Linga in the Mankameshwar Temple when he was born in Mathura.

To meet the child form of Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva came down from Mount Kailash and showed up in the Mankameshwar Temple. If Lord Krishna played on his lap, Lord Shiva thought about building a Linga here. On the other hand, Lord Shiv's unique form scared Yashoda's child, so she told him to stay away from him.

When Lord Krishna saw this, he put on a show and started crying while pointing to Lord Shiva, living under a banyan tree. When Yashoda saw this, she called Lord Shiva and asked him to bless her child. After blessing it, Lord Shiva returned to this spot and built a linga.
