The Goddess of Maya Devi Temple is Goddess Maya; people believe her to be a manifestation of Goddess Shakti. According to the myth, Goddess Sati's heart and navel fell at Maya Devi Mandir. Adi Shakti, the Goddess of heavenly power, is thought to take the form of Goddess Maya. During Navratri and the Kumbh Mela, many devotees of the Goddess come to seek her blessings. One of the must see places to visit in Haridwar

Many people see Maya Devi as the principal Goddess of the sacred city. People believe every pilgrimage is complete with receiving Devi's darshan. Haridwar's former name, Mayapuri, was given to the city in honour of this god. Along with the idol of the Goddess Maya, the hallowed shrine also houses the models of the Adi parashakti-inspired goddesses Kamakhya and Kali. The presiding Goddess can grant any aspirations or wishes of the individual seeking Her blessings, according to the belief that the holy temple is a Siddha peeth.

History

The celestial consort of Lord Shiva, Sati, wed him despite her father's desires, according to Hindu legend. Sati's father, Daksh Prajapati, once planned to hold a Yagya and invited every god besides Lord Shiva. Even after realising this, Sati went to her father's house and begged him to ask her husband. Daksh, however, denigrated both Lord Shiva and her daughter. Sati burnt herself alive in the Yagya's fire because she couldn't take her husband's insult.

Virbhadra and Khali were given the task of destroying the Yagya. Lord Shiva also commanded to kill Daksha after learning about Sati's sacrifice. He crossed the globe while dragging his wife's burned body while wailing and performing the dance of destruction (tandav), full of rage. Lord Vishnu instructed his Sudarshan Chakra to slice Sati's body into pieces to prevent Shiva's wrath from destroying the universe. On the Indian subcontinent, these shattered parts landed in 52 different locations. The term "Shakti Peeth" refers to these components. One of the most renowned Shakti peethas is the Goddess Maya Devi temple. Where Sati's heart and navel landed is where it was born.
