Augustmuni is a tiny town in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district. The famed Rishi Augustya temple is located here, and the village takes its name (Augustyamuni) from it. Phata is around 50 kilometers from Augustmuni on the way to Kedarnath and 18 kilometers from Gaurikund. Augustmuni temple
The Augustmuni temple is in this area and is named Augustmuni. The temple, which comprises August Kund and a Lord Shiva shrine, was once Saint Augustine's center of worship.
The Agasteshwar Mahadev temple honors the sage Agastya. It has archaeological value; representations of Gods and Goddesses have been etched on stones. A large fair occurs on Baisakhi, and many devotees come to worship and pay their respects to God.
History & Mythology
There are numerous legends related to this location. According to one tradition, when Saint Augusta visited this location, he was horrified by two creatures famous as Aatapi-Vatapi. These monsters used to dress up and invite guests to their homes for lunch. Innocent saints would accept their invitation and travel to their location.
When people came to visit, it was believed that one of the monsters would morph into a dwarf and hide in the food they were receiving. When the other monster summoned him, he would enter the person's body and cut it out. The two beasts eventually ate the man. People feared the two monstrous brothers and sought Saint Augusta's assistance.
