History
Lord Shiva is honored at the Tungnath temple. The belief is that the temple is to be 1000 years old and is the third in the Panch Kedar hierarchy. Adi Shankaracharya discovered this precious temple. According to legend, Vyas Rishi reminded the Pandavas that because they were responsible for the deaths of their cousins during the Mahabharata conflict, only Lord Shiva could pardon them.
The Pandavas began searching for Lord Shivac in the Himalayas, but Lord Shiva ignored them because they were guilty. Lord Shiva disguised himself as a bull and hid underground to avoid the Pandavas. The spots where the parts of the bull came to light are now famous Shiva temples.
Also, Pandavas built temples of Lord Shiva to adore and venerate, asking for his forgiveness and blessings. The navel and stomach at Madhyamaheshwar, the hump at Kedarnath, the arm at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, and his Jata (hair or locks) at Kalpeshwar are all associated with him.
