History
The demon king Ravana was a devotee of Lord Shiva throughout the epic Ramayana and did severe penance to obtain his favor. Lord Shiva appeared before Ravana and offered him a boon to test his devotion. Lord Shiva refused Ravana's request for immortality, claiming that no one can escape the cycle of life and death.
Ravana, undeterred, skillfully requested tremendous power and invincibility, believing he might become invulnerable. Ravana became practically unstoppable in warfare when Lord Shiva handed him the boon. In his arrogance, however, Ravana wanted to seize and control the Moon (Chandra) in order to demonstrate his newfound authority.
Lord Shiva engaged Ravana in a deadly battle at Chandrashila Peak to prevent his tyranny. Lord Shiva overcame Ravana and freed the Moon from his grasp after a long struggle. The crescent Moon fell and settled atop the mountain, giving it the name 'Chandrashila.'
