Lothal, the historical site, is about 80 km southwest of Ahmedabad. It is where a city stood 4500 years ago. It was one of the most important in the Indus Valley civilization, which spanned what is now Pakistan. During excavations, the earliest known artificial pier in the world came to light.

It had a connection to the Sabarmati River's former channel. Other visible features are the drainage system, the lower town, the bead mill, and the warehouses. The place has been put forward to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most popular attractions among the places to visit in Ahmedabad.

Archaeologists have found interesting things in this city, like canals and dockyards, that show it was a significant trade hub. Artefacts show that trade may have taken place with Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Persia. This area has given rise to a whole village complete with a dock and market.

History

The cute town is right between the Bhogavo River and the Sabarmati River. Archaeologists found Lothal and other sites that might have been connected to the Harappa and Indus Valley Civilizations when they explored the Sabarmati river area in 1950.

Before Lothal was found, people thought that these civilizations only lived in the area that is now northeast Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northwest India.

In the past, boats could sail straight to Lothal from the Gulf of Cambay during high waves. These days, the sea is more than 19 km away. People think that this culture lived in the areas where the rivers Indus and Saraswati met, but these water sources later dried up.

From 1955 to 1962, archaeologists dug in the Sabarmati Valley for almost seven years. In 1976, a museum was built at the spot. It is essential to learn about both of these cultures because Lothal was a link between this part of the subcontinent and places like Mesopotamia.
