Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple is a very sacred destination for various devotees. This temple is located at a distance of 8 km from Trichy. Sri Subramanya Swamy temple is considered one of the oldest temples in the region. Many devotees are coming here to worship Lord Subramanya, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

History of the Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple

It is believed that the famous Sri Subramanya Swamy temple was built by the Chola dynasty during the 19th century CE and 13th century CE. It is also believed that Agastya was one of the greatest sages of that time. Agastya traveled all across the whole Indian subcontinent, where he spread his knowledge and did different types of teaching activity also.
 
Once upon a time, he meditated in the Vayalur region and built a small shrine for Lord Murugan. Later on, the shrine was converted into a large Temple called Shri Subramanya Swamy Temple.

A very beautiful Dravidian style architecture is followed inside the temple. Along with this, an annual festival also happens in this temple during July to August. You will see many devotees coming to this temple to seek blessings.

The architecture of the temple

Very beautiful architecture is followed in the Sri Subrahmanya Swamy Temple. The temple is designed with a high-raised pyramid-shaped tower above the entrance. In the temple, you can see very beautiful carvings of Hindu deities. There is a Gopuram at the temple entrance, which is raised at 90 feet above the ground level.

The Gopuram has 13 Tiers and is made up of granite with a rectangular base. The main shrine in the temple is located in the middle of the temple. Along with the main shrine of Lord Murugan, other smaller shrines of different deities are present in the temple.

A large Courtyard is also present inside the temple, surrounded by pillared corridors. You can see beautiful sculptures of different deities on the corridor's walls.
