Bavikonda is one of the oldest and most beautiful Buddhist places in Vizag. The place is in Andhra Pradesh. Bavikonda is one of the best places to visit in Vizag.

History of Bavikonda

The Indian Buddhist temples had to be evacuated because of Muslim attacks. No one knows when these attacks happened, but British archeological studies in 1906 proved it. The ancient Bavikonda Buddhist Monastery was built around the year 3000 BCE. From the diggings at the site, many things were found that helped figure out how old the complex was.

Of the bones found here, the most important one is an urn that holds a piece of bone that is thought to be from Lord Buddha. People can find a lot of writing all over the building. The Archaeological Department also found coins, pots, caskets, tiles, and grave goods at the site.

The area is now under maintenance by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage. It looks out for these kinds of Buddhist places, so they are under protection. The four mountains that comprise Bavikonda, Thotlakonda, Pavuralakonda, and Bojjannakonda are all UNESCO heritage places.

Architecture

In the Indian region, the Bavikonda Buddhist Monastery is an old and holy place. The place's name comes from the many wells in the area. The complex is over a big area. People can find stupas, which are made up of a few hills.

ou can also find different shrines, temples, and art shops throughout the complex. The area of Bavikonda consists of 26 other buildings. The buildings belong to three distinct stages, which is in the way they were built. The Bavikonda stupa, also famous as the Mahastupa, is where kitchens and shops used to be. It is a round Buddhist shrine that is still in excellent shape today.

The best time to visit

October through March is the best time to visit Visakhapatnam. Last but not least, November through December is also good. Some people will be around because this is the busiest time of the year. The weather is mild in July, August, and September. However, Bavikonda is a must-visit during the Vizag tour packages.
