Vizag Harbour History

Previously, Visakhapatnam was a port city that traded with the Middle East and Rome. Small boats carried cargo from the Vizag shores to the ships. In the 12th century, Visakhapatnam was a market under the rule of those who had markets. The city also has a temple, Bheemeswara Swamy Temple, in the east Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. It has writings about the Vizagapatam merchant.

The port in Visakhapatnam came in the year 1682. The port started handling goods in the year 1882-83. The principal commodities traded were oilseeds, jute, and clothes. The port had the most scope of trade with Burma, and engineers played an important role.

The port in Visakhapatnam is on the East Coast. It is safe from cyclones as it has a Dolphin's nose hill to protect it. The idea of having a port came from the British India Steam Navigation Company. They needed a port and proposed the idea in 1858 and 1877. The concept of the port was approved later after World War I.
