Shri Ekling ji Temple is one of the major tourist Places to visit in udaipur. It is famous as much for the divine aura as for its impeccable cultural significance. Mewar rules dedicated this temple to Lord Shiva, the patron God of their clan. Among Shiva's many names, Ekling ji is the most popular in Rajasthan. 'Ek' in English means 'one,' and 'ling' is a phallus sign of Lord Shiva.

The temple has a unique four-faced idol of Shiva. It was chiseled out of a block of black marble. Around fifty feet in height, the four faces represent four forms of the Shiva. The one which faces east represents the Surya; the westward one depicts Lord Brahma; the north-facing side symbolizes Lord Vishnu, whereas the southern one is Lord Shiva himself.

History of Ekling Ji Temple

According to the Ekalinga Mahatmya, a historical text of the 15th century, Bappa Rawal, an eighth-century ruler, was the temple's original builder. The earliest possible Shiva idol was installed by Hamir Singh, who also renovated many parts of the temple. Later, Rana Kumbha, in the 15th century, reconstructed the temple. Additionally, he also built an adjacent Vishnu temple. Again, Rana Raimal, son of Rana Kumbh, spearheaded the last renovation work of the temple. Subsequently, he ensconced the current idol on the shrine.

On entering the temple, you will see a Nandi idol seeming to greet you. According to Hindu mythology, Nandi(bull) is the vehicle of Shiva. He is also the guardian deity of Mountain Kailasa. In addition to them, you will find two other sculptures of Nandi inside the temple.

Additionally, Devi Annapurna, Lord Ganesa, and Lord Karthikey are present encircling the Shivalinga. Besides, you can also spot the idols of goddess Lakshmi and Saraswathi.

Furthermore, Ekling ji Temple boasts of ornated silver doors. They depict Lord Ganesh and Lord Karthikey standing as guards of Shiva's abode. The temple consists of has two waterbodies- Karz Kund and Tulsi Kund. Devotees revere those as sacred water bodies.

Naturally, being a Shiva Temple, devotees celebrate Shivratri with much pomp and glory. During Shivaratri, Lord Shiva is decorated with expensive jewelry.
