Jag Mandir is another popular tourist spot in Udaipur. On one island on Lake Pichola island, it is perhaps as old as the Mewar antiquity. Albeit the fact that mandir means temple, Jag Mandir is not a temple; it is a palace.
Jag Mandir History
This history of this Palace is as decorated as the Palace itself. Amar Singh started to build the Jag Mandir in the year1551. After him, Maharana Karan Singh (1620-1628) continued the work. Finally, Maharana Jagat Singh I in 1652 completed the construction of the Palace. And because of that, people know it as ‘Jag Mandir’ honouring Maharana Jagat Singh.
Furthermore, according to popular belief, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan lived here for a while as a young prince. He was born of a Rajput mother. The architecture of this Palace very much pleased the young price’s aesthetic sensibility. He built the pieta dura of the Taj Mahal modelling it on Jag Mandir Palace.
Jag Mandir Architecture
The life-size sculptures of elephants seem to welcome visitors to this august Palace. ‘Palace of the Twelve Stones’, situated on twelve marble slabs embellish the sublime beauty of the Palace. The courtyard is enriched with a teeming flower garden, Bougainvillaea, jasmine, palm trees, jasmine, and roses grace the elegant garden. There is also a marble fountain in the centre of the garden.
In addition to all these, the Palace also boasts of a museum. Jagriti museum presents the people with the royal history of Mewar- all the more reasons you should include this in your UDAIPUR TOUR PACKAGE.
