Kalyanasundareswarar Temple is a famous Hindu temple located in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. This temple has great architecture and beautiful style. Not only this, but the temple's history is also really rich. This temple is one of the most visited place, among the different PLACES TO VISIT IN KUMBAKONAM. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Kalyanasundareswarar Temple

The history of the Kalyanasundareswarar Temple is amazing. The temple was built during the rule of the Cholas dynasty between 9th to 13th Centuries CE. King Kulothunga Chola 1 was a very famous king of the Chola dynasty. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. So, he decided to build a temple in the union of Lord Kalyanasundareswarar and Goddess Kokilambal. 

The temple has a mixture of different types of styles. Because different dynasties ruled the place, all of them contributed a lot toward the development and reconstruction of the temple. For example, Gopuram was added to the temple during the time of Vijayanagar dynasty rule. The walls were covered with beautiful carvings during the rule of the Nayak dynasty. Kumbabishekam Ceremony is a famous ceremony that happens in the temple once every 12 years. During this time, a large number of devotees are coming to worship God. 

The Temple's Architecture

The Kalyanasundareswarar Temple architecture is amazing and follows a Dravidian and Chola’s style. The temple has a Gopuram that is present at the entrance of the temple. The tower has a height of 150 feet. On the whole Gopuram, you will find beautiful carvings of God, Goddess, and other celestial creatures.

The temple has a main sanctum sanctorum, located in the center of the temple complex dedicated to Lord Shiva. A rectangular courtyard surrounds the main Shrine. Not only this, but the corridor walls have beautiful paintings of Hindu mythology also.

A Mandapam is present in the temple, known as Kalyana Mandapam. This Mandapam has 16 pillars. All these pillars have very beautiful and intricate carvings. This Kalyana Mandapam was used for marriage during earlier times.

There is a very beautiful tank also present inside the temple. The tank is known as Kalyana Theertham. The Kalyanak Theertham has sacred water. It is believed that whoever is taking a dip in the water will get rid of the problems. The water is considered to have healing properties and medicinal properties.

There are four trees that are present inside the temple. These four trees are considered the four Vedas. So, if anybody is coming to worship in the temple, they are worshiping these trees also.
