Suryanar Kovil is a very famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Surya. This temple is located in Suryanar Kovil town. The temple is only located at a distance of 15 km from Kumbakonam. Not only this, but the place is easily collected by road. So, while going for your KUMBAKONAM TOUR PACKAGE, remember to visit this temple. 

You will be amazed to know that this beautiful temple is one of the nine Navagraha temples that are present in the state. A large number of devotees come to this place to worship Lord Surya. The temple was constructed during the rule of Chola’s dynasty. In the temple, Lord Surya deity is present with two concorts, Chhaya and Usha. Along with the deity of Lord Surya, you will find the shrine of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Lord Brahma also. 

A unique feature is present inside the temple, and that is that among the two sanctums of Lord Surya, one of the sanctums is east facing, and the other sanctum is west facing. There is a Hall of 12 Zodiac signs also that is present inside the temple. In that hall, you will find sculptures of all the 12 signs of the Zodiac.

History of Suryanar Kovil Temple

The Suryanar Kovil temple was constructed during the rule of King Kulothunga Chola 1 during the 12th century. It is also called the temple and was constructed in honor of Lord Surya, who is known as the source of life and energy. Earlier, the temple was named Surya Narayan Temple, and later on, the name was changed to Suryanar Kovil Temple. 

However, during the rule of various dynasties at this place, various types of construction happened inside the temple. The major dynasties that contributed towards the development of the temple were the Nayak rulers and the Pandayas king. 

There is a large pond also that is present inside the temple complex. The pond is known as Surya Pushkarni. It is believed that whoever is taking a dip in the water will get cured of different types of diseases. 

The architecture the Temple

Suryanar Kovil temple has very beautiful architecture with intricate carvings and culture. You will find beautiful carvings on the walls and pillars of the temple also. When you enter the temple, then the main entrance has a Gopuram or Tower. The Gopuram has a height of 15 m.  Very beautiful dividing style architecture is followed inside the temple. On the walls of the temple, carving of animals, mythical creatures, God, and goddess is present. One of the most interesting facts about this temple is that this temple is based on the principles of Vastu Shastra. This means that it will bring good positive energy to the temple and to the visitor. 

Overall, Suryanar Kovil temple is a fascinating Temple that has two sanctums of Lord Surya. The temple has very beautiful scenery also. So, along with worshipping at the temple, you can also enjoy the nearby places also.
