Mahalingaswamy Temple, Thiruvidaimaruthur, is a famous Hindu Temple in Thiruvidaimaruthur. This place is a small town which is present in Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to lord Shiva, and the temple is one of the most famous holy places.

Because of the boon, he became Invincible. After that, when the Gods requested Lord Shiva to slay Tarkasur, god Shiva created the Mahalingaswamy lingam and used it to kill Tarkasura. 

Mahalingaswamy Temple history

The Chola dynasty constructed the Mahalingaswamy temple. During the time of various kingdoms ruled the place after the Chola’s.  All of them contributed towards the reconstruction and rebuildment that happened in the temple. 

Various types of festivals happens inside the temple. One of the most famous festivals that happens inside the temple is Mahashivratri. Along with this, some the famous festivals that are celebrated here are Aadipuram, Thai Poosam, and a lot more.  

The architecture of the Mahalingaswamy Temple

The Mahalingaswamy temple follows a South Indian style and Dravidian style architecture. Very beautiful and intricate carvings are present here. You will find Gopuram, which is present inside the temple boundary. There are four Gopuram inside the templ. All of them are located on the sides of the temple. 

Along with this, there are various other mandapams inside the temple. Among those, one is the main Mandapam, known as Mahamandapa. Earlier, in the Mahamandapa, different types of occasions were celebrated. 

A sanctum sanctorum is present inside the centre of the temple. The sanctum consist of the Mahalingaswamy Lingam. This is made up of black granite. Overall, the height of the Lingam is around 10 feet. 

Along with the main sanctorum present here, you will also find various other shrines. 

The different shrines represent different gods and goddesses.   

Overall, Mahalingaswamy temple is very beautiful temple and consists of beautiful carvings and sculptures. The temple is a very holy place in the area. Among the different temples that are present in this area, this temple is one of the most worshipped ones.
