Nageswaran Temple is a very famous temple which is located in Kumbakonam district of Tamil Nadu. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Not only this, but this temple is a very famous temple in South India. A large number of devotees are coming to this temple every year. The temple is also known as Naganatha Swamy Temple. The main deity of the temple is Lord Nageswaran. It is believed that god Nageswaram has the power to cure snake bites.

Nageswaran Temple History

Nageswaran Temple was created during the rule of the Cholas dynasty. The temple was constructed during the ninth century. Kocengannan was a very famous king of the Chola dynasty. He constructed the famous Nageswaram temple. However, after the rule of Chola’s dynasty, various other dynasties also ruled the place. All of them contributed a lot toward the development of the temple. The different dynasties that ruled the place after the Cholas were Pallavas, Vijay Nagar dynasty, Nayak rulers, and a lot more. 

The Muslim invader Malik Kafur led to the destruction of the temple during the 14th century. However, later on, the temple was again built in the 16th century by the Nayak dynasty. Different famous saints and scholars have been associated with the famous temple. One of the most famous saints, Appar, wrote hymns towards the temple in the 7th century. 

Currently, the famous Nageswara Temple has been added to the most visited and most famous place by the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple’s architecture and spiritual holiness attract a lot of devotees throughout the year.

The temple also has very beautiful paintings. The Paintings that are present inside the temple will depict the scene from Hindu mythology. The majority of the paintings that are present inside the temple are made during the Nayak period rule. 

The temple's architecture

Nageswaran Temple is covered in an area of two acres. There are four entrance gates in the temple. All the four entrance gates are located on the four sides of the temple. The main shrine of the temple is present in the center of the temple. The main shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Along with the main shrine, several other shrines are also present. The different shrines that are present in the temple are of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Murugan and a lot more. When you enter the temple, you will find five tiered Raja Gopuram. The five tired Raja Gopuram have very intricate carvings and sculptures. You can see carvings of gods, goddesses, mythological creatures, and other celestial objects.

There is a main Mandapam present inside the temple. The main Mandapam is known as Maha Mandapam. This Maha Mandapam was used earlier for various types of occasions and ceremonies. A total of 16 pillars support the Maha Mandapam. The Natya Mandapam that is present inside the temple has 108 pillars. In all the mandapams, you will find great carvings and cultures. 

Another interesting fact about the temple is that there is a large tank called Kalyani which is present inside the temple. It is believed that the tank has Holy powers, and whoever is using the tank water will get rid of the problems.
