People popularly know this temple as Vaitheeswaran Koil, and it is a revered sanctuary. The beautiful environs of the temple nestle between Sirkazhi and Myladuthurai in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. Built almost 1000 years ago, this ancient Hindu temple is one of the significant places to visit in Kumbakonam for its historical and spiritual charm.

The temple dedicates itself to Lord Vaidyanathar (Lord of Healing and Divine Physician) and His Consort Thaiyal Nayagi (The Mother who can sew up wounds). They hold a unique place in our collective spiritual landscape. The temple is also popular for Lord Muruga, Selva Muthukumaran. It is also one of the Navagraha Temples for Mars (Angarakya).

What is the significance of Vaitheeswaran Koil Temple?

People worldwide know this temple for its spiritual importance and magical healing powers. The name Lord Vaitheeswaran comes from the words Vaidya, which means healer, and Eswaran, which means Shiva. So, it refers to Lord Shiva, who has taken on the job of a doctor or healer. His wife is Thaiyal Nayagi, which means "the Divine Mother who can sew someone back together." Together with their son Muthu Kumaran, they heal people who come to this place with faith and hope. People who have these miracle healings often tell other people about them.

Vaitheeswaran Koil has magical healing powers and a deep spiritual meaning. These come from the temple's holy past and the presence of Lord Vaitheeswaran, famous as the God of Healing. People think Lord Vaitheeswaran's fantastic healing powers came from a fascinating story connected to the building.

Who are the main deities worshipped in Vaitheeswaran Koil?

Vaidyanatha Swamy and Thaiyalnayaki are the principal gods in this temple. A shrine to Selva Muthukumara Swamy is also seen as important by many. Some people say that Shiva lingams were honoured by Rama, Jatayu, Skanda, Surya, and Angaraka. Many believe that Rama and his brother Lakshmana burned the vulture king Jatayu, whom Ravana killed when he tried to stop Ravana from taking Sita. This temple has a pond known as Jatayu Gundam.

The best time to visit the temple

The best time to visit is during the temple's big celebrations, which are the 10 days of the Thai holiday in January and February and the 28 days of Panguni Brahmmotsavam. Other notable festivals include the 6 days of Aipasi Skanda Sashti in October and November, Vaikasi Mannabishek, and the monthly Kruthikas. Every Tuesday, people hold a ceremony for Angaraka and carry him in a parade. Many Kumbakonam tour packages include these special events, making it an ideal time to experience the temple's grandeur.
