Dhenupureeswarar Temple – Patteeswaram is also known as Patteeswaram temple. This temple is a very famous temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. You will find very beautiful architecture and the history of this temple. A large number of tourists from all over the world are coming to visit this beautiful place.

The temple was constructed during the rule of Chola's dynasty. Nayanars were a group of 63 Shaivite saints of Tamil Nadu. There are a total of 275 Paadalpetra Sthalams. This temple is one of those Paadalpetra Sthalams. 

There are two Shrines of Lord Shiva inside the temple. The first shrine that is present inside the temple is dedicated to Lord Dhanipurdeshwara. Another shrine that is present inside the temple is dedicated to Lord Vedapureeswarar. 

A very famous annual festival is celebrated in the temple, which happens during the months of Panguni. Panguni month happens between March and April. This festival continues for 10 days. A large number of devotees come from all over the world to take part in the religious festival. Dhenupureeswarar Temple – Patteeswaram Temple History

The famous Dhenupureeswarar Temple was constructed between the 6th to 8th-century ad by the Cholas dynasty. However, after that also, various dynasties came to rule the place and contributed towards the development and reconstruction of the temple. 

There are various methods and stories regarding the history of the temple. It is believed that this temple was built on the place where Lord Shiva defeated Mahishasur. Mahishasur was a demon who had the power to change into buffalo. This power was gained by Mahishasur from Lord Brahma. After that, the Gods were unable to defeat Mahishasur, and they asked Lord Shiva for help. 

Another great story associated with the temple is that this is the site where Lord Shiva performs a cosmic dance. This cosmic dance is also known as Tandavam. It is told that Lord Vishnu was present during the dance performed, and he was so indulged that he started singing praises 
about Lord Shiva. 

Dhenupureeswarar Temple architecture

The architecture of Dhenupureeswarar temple is a blend of Dravidian and Pallava styles. Along with all this, you will also find some reflections on Vijayanagar and Chola styles also. 

When you enter the temple, then the temple's main entrance has a Gopuram. The Gopuram or Tower has South Indian-style carvings. The carving setup present on the Gopuram is very intricate and consists of a different god, goddess, and other mythical creatures. 

There is a small chamber inside the temple which is known as Garbhagriha. In this chamber, only the priests can go. Again, the chamber has very beautiful carvings from the scenes of Hindu mythology. 

Among the different mandapams, the maha mandapam is used for different types of big ceremonies and rituals. You will see a Nandi statue also, which is made of granite, in this temple. 

Along with the main shrine that is present in the temple, several other shrines are also present. The different shrines that are present here have very beautiful architecture and designs.
