Gangai Konda cholapuram is a village which is located in Tamilnadu. This place is a very famous holy place. The Gangai Konda Cholapuram temple was built by Rajendra Chola 1. He was a very brave and great ruler of the Chola dynasty. Rajendra Chola was well known for his military campaigns and arts. Earlier, this village was used as a capital for the Cholas empire. 

Thousands of workers were involved while creating this beautiful temple, and various artists were also hired for this work. The Dravidian style of architecture is followed in this temple. It is also believed that various rulers looked at the beauty of Gangai Konda Cholapuram temple and then created temples at various other places. So, this temple is like an inspiration also.

The main shrine of the great temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Along with the main shrine, various other shrines are also present, like Goddess Parvati, Lord Murugan, and many more. 

It is believed that during the 11th century, the Cholas were expanding their Empire. During that time, they built a new capital city that was named Gangai Konda Cholapuram. Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and during that time, the temple showed the great power of the Cholas Empire. 

The temple is a nine-story Temple that has a height of 185 feet. Various beautiful sculptures have been shown on the walls of the temple. The Shivalingam present in this temple is the second largest Shivalingam that you can find in Tamilnadu. You can even see beautiful Natraj sculptures at this place. A Nandi Bull statue is also present in the temple at the entrance of the temple. 

All the carvings that are done in this temple are made with the help of granite stones. The great sculptures that you should definitely have a look at in this temple are the Shiv Parvati sculpture, Goddess Saraswati sculpture, and a lot more.
