Velankanni is a small town which is located in Tamilnadu. This town is very famous for its Catholic Shrine. Along with this, various beautiful holy places are also available at this place. Various dynasties ruled this town over time. One of the major rulers of this place is the Chola dynasty. They ruled here from the 9th century to the 13th century.

Velankanni matha

Velankanni Matha is a Catholic medium Shrine that is present in Tamilnadu. From all over India, various people come to this holy place for the whole year. 

It is believed that once upon a time, the virgin Mary asked for milk from a Shepherd boy to feed her baby. After asking for milk, the Shepherd boy gave him a pot of milk. Earlier, the cow of the shepherd used to be ill. 

After the incident, the cow produced a large amount of milk every day, and the cow didn't face any kind of health issues also. At this place, pilgrims started to come to this place, and hence Velankanni Matha was formed. 

A very beautiful church of the Virgin Mary is present at this place. Various kinds of local celebrations in this church on the 8th of September. On this day, the feast day is celebrated.

Velankanni beach is located near the famous Velankanni Matha Shrine only. A beach is a great place for relaxation and enjoyment. So after visiting the Shrine, you can easily spend your beautiful day there.

Velankanni church history

It is believed that Velankanni Church is dedicated to the lady of good health. During the 16th century, the Portuguese arrived in the town. As the Portuguese were Catholic devotees, hence after coming to this place, they built the church properly. 

There is a story that when Dutch shoulders were attached to the Portuguese land, during those times, the Portuguese soldiers worshiped the virgin Mary. They worshiped themselves and the town also. 

However, during the rule of various dynasties, the church was rebuilt and reconstructed several times. From all over the world, various devotees come to this town to have a blessing in this church.
