Among the different places to visit in Thanjavur, This Hindu temple is the most famous one. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman. The Goddess is known for prosperity and health. In this temple, along with goddess Idol, you will also find the idol of Lord Murugan,  Lord Ganesha, and Lord Shiva. Lord Karappu Swami Is the Protector of the temple. There is a noteworthy Shrine for Lord Karappu Swami.

History Of the temple

It is believed that lord Veerapandiya Kottabomman created the temple. According to the locals, it is believed that one day Lord Veerapandiya Kottabomman saw a dream of Goddess Mariamman Asking him to build a temple. After that, he built the famous Punnai Nallur Mariamman Temple.

As the king got cured of smallpox after building the temple because of that, the temple is well known for its healing powers.
 
The architecture of the temple
 
The temple has stunning architecture. A vast courtyard is present inside the temple with pillared corridors. Inside the courtyard, you will see stone slabs. Along with this, sub-shrines and mandaps are also present.

The Goddess Idol is made up of stone and decorated with flowers and jewels. Inside the temple, the yagashala pit and Thulabharam are also present.
 
Various beautiful carvings and paintings are also used inside the temple. In this temple, various famous festivals are celebrated, like Vaikasi Visakam, Navratri, Pongal, and many more.
