History of Poondi Matha Kovil 

The church was built during the 18th century. At that time, a small chapel was built, which was dedicated to the lady of Lourdes. Unfortunately, the church was destroyed due to flooding in 1815. But, after some time in the year 1820, it was rebuilt. 

It is believed that in the year 1853, a woman was suffering from illness. She worshiped the lady of Lourdes. After some time, she was healed. From that time, it is believed that the lady of Lourdes healed the lady with her powers. 

In the year 1956, the statue of the basilica was elevated. Inside the church, you can see great architecture mixed with Indian and Gothic styles. Gorgeous glasses are also present inside the basilica. These glasses tell the beautiful stories of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
