Kumbakonam is a very famous city which is located in the Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu. This place is also known as the temple city. Here, you will find various fantastic architecture in the city. 

Earlier, the city of Kumbakonam was ruled by Cholas, Pallavas, Pandyas, Marathas, and Nayaks. This city was one of the significant educational centers available at that time. 

A large number of dynasties ruled the city. Medieval Cholas ruled the city after the Cholas. During this time, various types of holy temple construction were done. After Cholas, Pandas ruled the kingdom during 1290. After that, the Vijaynagar empire ruled the kingdom and then  Marathas, Madurai, and Thanjavur ruled the place. 

Wintertime has been considered the primary time to visit Kumbakonam. The temperature will be low during this time, and you will not find traveling difficult. The temperature range during the winter will be around 20 degrees celsius to 30 degrees Celsius. 

Kumbakonam tourist places 

The different places to visit in Thanjavur are- 

1. Raja Raja Cholan Memorial 

Raja Raja Cholan Memorial was the place where the famous king Raja Raja Chola 1 spent his last days. At this place, a memorial was built. 

2. Nageswaraswamy temple 

Aditya Chola constructed this great temple. A very sophisticated architecture is followed in this temple. This temple is considered a very holy temple where lord shiva is worshiped. You should definitely add this place to your KUMBAKONAM TOUR PACKAGE.

3. Mahamaham tank 

Mahamaham tank has 21 wells. All 21 wells are devoted to a god or goddess. Masimaham festival is a very famous festival that happens in this place. Along with this, the very renowned Kumbh mela is also celebrated at this place. 

Navagraha temple 

Navagraha temple is a famous cluster of temples built by the Chola dynasty in Kumbakonam. It is believed that Sage Kalava prayed to the Navagrahas for his health cure at this place. The Navagrahas were pleased, but they did not have the powers to cure. Because of that, he cursed the nine planets, and Velurukku Venam was sent to earth. Later, lord Shiva appeared and helped the people. 

All the temples are- Surya, Chandra, Angaarakan, Guru, Buddha, Sukra, Shani, Ketu and Rahu Navagrahastalam. All nine temples are located in different villages. Surya temple is one of the most famous Navagraha temples. This temple is the only temple where you will find shrines of all other graha devtas. 

Chandiran temple is the smallest graha temple. The location of the temple is very beautiful as all around the temple. You will find greenery. Shani temple is the largest temple among all the temples present.

1. Kasi Viswanathar temple

This temple is dedicated to mata Parvati. It is believed that lord Rama and Lakshman were going to Lanka when they acquired Rudraksham. They worshiped at the Stala lingam. It is believed that the lingam is growing over the ages. Masi Magam is a famous festival that is celebrated at this place. If you are going during the months of February to March, you can easily celebrate the festival. 

2. Nageswaran temple 

Aditya Chola constructed the Nageswaran temple during the 12th century. A very famous architecture is followed in this temple. The temple is known as Surya Kottam because of the beautiful sunlight that enters the temple. 

3. Sarangapani temple 

This temple is the tallest temple tower in Asia. The Sarangapani temple is dedicated to lord Vishnu. The chariot festival is a famous festival that is celebrated in the month of Chittirai. 

4. Chakrapani temple 

Chakrapani temple is a famous temple dedicated to lord Shiva. This temple is among the five temples that are involved in the Mahamaham festival. Along with this, you will see various beautiful drawings and stories on the walls of the temple.
