History of the Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary

During the rule of Cholas, the land of the wildlife sanctuary was used as a trading port. When the Britishers came, at that time, this trading port was converted into a salt factory. This is because of the excellent quality salt that was produced at this place. However, when India gained its independence in 1947 after that, the place was not used as a salt storage factory.

After a long time, in 1967, the Government of Tamil Nadu created this place as a wildlife sanctuary. Since that time only, this place has had various types of plants, animals, and birds living here.
 
Wildlife of the sanctuary 

This wildlife sanctuary is full of various types of animals and birds. You can easily see chital deer and blackbuck at this place. Along with this, ponies can also be seen very easily near grassy areas. There are different marshy areas also present inside the wildlife sanctuary. Seasons for the animals
