Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary is a famous Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. This wildlife century is covered in an area of 21.47 square kilometers, and you should visit this place among different places to visit in Thanjavur

History of the Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary

During the rule of Cholas, the land of the wildlife sanctuary was used as a trading port. When the Britishers came, at that time, this trading port was converted into a salt factory. This is because of the excellent quality salt that was produced at this place. However, when India gained its independence in 1947 after that, the place was not used as a salt storage factory.

After a long time, in 1967, the Government of Tamil Nadu created this place as a wildlife sanctuary. Since that time only, this place has had various types of plants, animals, and birds living here.
 
Wildlife of the sanctuary 

This wildlife sanctuary is full of various types of animals and birds. You can easily see chital deer and blackbuck at this place. Along with this, ponies can also be seen very easily near grassy areas. There are different marshy areas also present inside the wildlife sanctuary. Near those areas, you can easily see different types of migrant birds, like black-necked storks, seagulls, and many more. Seasons for the animals

You cannot see all the animals in all the Seasons. There are some specific Seasons during which the chances of seeing some specific wildlife animal are more. If you are traveling between October to January, during that time, more migratory birds are present inside the wildlife sanctuary. The different birds that you can see at this time are waders, flamingoes, ducks, and many more.

If you are traveling during the February season, during that time, also you can see various types of birds. 
The time from March to August will have a high temperature. During that time, you can see animals like civets, ponies, blackbuck, and a lot more.
