Who was the founder of the Forest Research Institute?

Sir Dietrich Brandis founded the FRI in Chandbagh (where Doon School currently stands) 1878. At the time, it was famous as the British Imperial Forest School.

About the FRI

FRI Dehradun is one of the nation's first research institutes devoted to forest science. It is India's most extensive centre for training centred around forests. It attracts thousands of students annually to study and investigate all facets of forests.

It is a vast 50-acre campus, and the institution's 2.5-hectare central tower features a blend of Greco-Roman and Colonial architectural styles. Against the backdrop of the Himalayas, this Institute is well worth a visit.

Previously, the building was recognized as the most significant brick tower in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records. The main building, which houses the museum and offices together, is a fine example of colonial architecture.
