History of the Academy
The IMA was created in 1932 as part of a British plan to make the military more Indian. The Indian Military Academy got the old Indian Railways Railway Staff College, its 206-acre grounds and other buildings that helped it run.
The first group of 40 IMA cadets, Gentleman Cadets (GC), began training on October 1, 1932. Brigadier L.P. Collins became in charge of them as the first commander. Field Marshal Chetwode opened the school on December 10, 1932, at the end of the first term. His name is on the building that the museum is in.
