Tapkeshwar is a well-known Shiva temple on Dehradun's banks of the seasonal Asan river. Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, 6.5 kilometres from Dehradun, is famous for housing one of the cave's earliest Shivlings. Water droplets continuously dropped on the Shivling, hence 'Tapkeshwar'.

Why is Tapkeshwar Temple famous?

Tapkeshwar Mahadev Mandir is one of Dehradun's most beautiful and spiritual tourist spots. It is notable for its Shiv-ling, a direct reflection and emblem of Lord Shiva and attracts visitors and locals. Among the places in Dehradun, this is one of the most beautiful.

Where was Ashwathama born in Dehradun?

Drona and Kripi's son is Ashwatthama. He was born in a jungle cave (the current Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Dehradun, Uttarakhand). Drona spent many years performing terrible penances to please Lord Shiva to have a son with the same courage as Lord Shiva.

History of the Tapkeshwar Temple

According to Mahabharata tradition, Guru Dornacharya, the royal Guru of the Pandavas and Kauravas, was said to have dwelt in these caverns. As a result, the caverns here are now famous as Drona caves. When Dronacharya's wife gave birth to their son Ashwathama, she could not breastfeed him.

Ashwathama prayed fervently to Lord Shiva because Guru Dronacharya did not have the luxury of purchasing a cow or cow's milk. Lord Shiva blessed the infant with the milk that fell in the Drona caves because of his dedication and devotion.

Tapkeshwar combines two words: 'Tapak,' which means 'drippy,' and 'Ishwar,' which signifies God. The pouring water droplets here create a peaceful atmosphere.

To get here, you must first climb a short distance. Two Shiva Linga’s reside at the temple. Both Shiva Lingas are entirely natural.

The Tapkeshwar Mela, or Tapkeshwar fair, is held yearly around Shivaratri and is extremely religiously significant. It is one of the most important festivals for all Shiva believers and is widely celebrated.

The best time to visit

Shivaratri, which occurs every year in February or March, is one of the most significant times to visit this temple. The best time to visit Dehradun and other mountainous places is between February and May, when the weather is pleasant and relieves North India's growing heat.

While monsoons allow you to explore the lush flora all around, they are also dangerous due to landslides. As a result, summer is the most outstanding season to visit Dehradun. Embark on a memorable adventure with the DEHRADUN TOUR PACKAGE.
