People from all over the world love to visit Dehradun's Khalanga War Memorial. It takes about 6 km to get to the city centre. In honour of the brave Gorkha troops, the memorial is one of India's most important heritage places.

It is the world's first and only memorial built by an army of British soldiers for their enemies in a war. The monument is also famous as the Kalinga mark in its home country. One of the most popular places to visit in Dehradun is the monument. Besides being historically significant, it is also fantastic and surrounded by trees.

History of Khalanga War Memorial

In honour of the brave Gorkha soldiers, it is the first monument ever built by the other side of a war. The British created the Khalanga War Memorial to honour the Gurkha soldiers who fought from 1814 to 1816. The bravery, fearlessness, and strength of the Gorkha regiment impressed the British, which is why the war memorial was built.

The Indian Archaeological Survey is in charge of the war monument. A fight identified as Nalapani occurred in October 1814 between Gurkha troops and British soldiers. The Gurkha soldiers were famous for being brave and tough.

People will remember how brave the Gurkha soldiers were when they defended their Kangra fort with an army of over 3,500 British troops and their families.

In October 1814, the British troops marched toward Dehradun to take over Nepali land. It was between the Ganga and the Yamuna rivers in the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. Nepali troops were in charge of it. On October 10, 1814, a fight occurred at Nalapani between British and Nepali forces.

The British lost this war and had to return to Dehradun. After a few days, on October 31, 1814, they fought another fight, and this time the British lost.

The siege lasted for a month. After that, the British stopped water sources to take control of the area, which they did successfully. This blockage of water went on for months. In November 1814, Nepali soldiers were slowly dying of thirst when the British struck the fort and took control of it.
