According to mythological sayings, Lord Parashurama was living in Shayadri. He killed the kshatriyas who had donated their land to Kashyap. He then requested to Lord Shiva for a shelter. Lord shiva convinced Parashurama that he needs to perform penance at Kadali kshetra.
Parushurama did exactly what he was said to. He threw the axe into the sea. Therefore they created a place for his penance. After that Parshurama saw Lord Shiva as Manjunath and goddess Parvathi was accompanying him. Both Hinduism and Buddhism are influencing the temple. The chief deity is of Lord Manjunath(Lord Shiva).
