The Jehangir Art Gallery is in Kalaghoda, in the southern part of Mumbai. It is one of the most famous places for artists to show off their work and is also one of the most popular places to visit in Mumbai. Cowasji Jehangir funded the gallery, which has pursued its artistic goal since opening in 1952. Sir Cowasji named the gallery after his late son Jehangir, and it showcased the work of well-known artists like M. F. Hussain and S. H. Raza.

This place is a haven for people who love art. This art gallery enjoys an excellent reputation. Artists must wait up to two years before showing their work here. Up to 300 shows are held at the prestigious gallery every year. It's interesting that artists who can't make it to the show are still here. Their work is set up right outside the building, on the sidewalk.

History and Establishment

Sir Cowasji Jehangir was a well-known businessman and humanitarian. In 1952, he started the Jehangir Art Gallery by giving the land and money to build it. He named the store for his late son, Jehangir Cowasji Jehangir, who loved art and attending art shows. Dr. Homi Bhabha, known as the "father" of India's nuclear program, opened the gallery.

The Bombay Art Society, a well-known group of artists and art fans, ran it. The gallery quickly started drawing artists who wanted to work there and allowed artists to showcase their artwork, whether new or well-known. Artists like M. F. Husain, S. H. Raza, Nandalal Bose, K. K. Hebbar, Tyeb Mehta, Akbar Padamsee, and Anjolie Ela Menon have shown their work at the gallery.

Exhibitions and Collections

The Jehangir Art Gallery has many shows and other events all year. It has works by Indian artists as well as artists from other countries. Different methodologies and materials like painting, sculpture, ceramics, textile art, and digital art are explored in solo and group exhibitions of art organized by the gallery.

It organizes festivals and events like the Kala Ghoda global festival, where one indulges in art, culture, and history, and the annual monsoon art show, which features works from upcoming, newfound artists. This famous gallery is a great place to visit as part of any Mumbai tour package.

Architectural Design

Durga Bajpai created the building, making it one of the oldest in the city. It stands in the Fort area of Mumbai, next to the well-known Prince of Wales Museum, now called Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.

The building now has seven exhibition rooms or galleries: the Auditorium Hall, Exhibition Galleries 1, 2, 3, and 4, the Hirji Jehangir Gallery, and the Terrace Art Gallery for Photography and Visual Art. The group of the Jehangir Art Gallery is currently in charge of keeping these in good shape and running the gallery.
