Builders constructed the Mumba Devi Temple in Bori Bunder in 1675. It is one of the oldest temples in Mumbai and a significant part of places to visit in Mumbai. Later, they tore it down and rebuilt it at Zaveri Bazaar in 1737. The temple is right in the middle of the busy Zaveri Bazaar. The well-known temple is for the Goddess Mumba Devi.

With utmost reverence, the Koli sailors worship Mumba Devi at Mumbai. They believe in the goddess as their protector. The main attraction of the temple is the ancient idol of Goddess Mumba Devi, which it houses. The figure is adorned with a gold chain, silver crown, and nose stud.

Legend and Mythology of Mumba Devi Temple

They built the temple in the 15th century in BoriBunder. Destruction struck the temple in the 18th century, but no one knows why. People believe normal wear and tear caused the damage. After that, builders constructed a new temple in the same place. Hindus viewed the Goddess as Mother Earth, and legend says a woman named Mumba built the first temple. This is how the temple got its name, Mumba Devi temple.

Spiritual Importance of the Temple

Koli sailors in Mumbai worship Mumba Devi with great devotion. They believe in the goddess and see her as their guardian. The main draw here is the old statue of the Goddess that is kept in the temple. A gold chain, a silver crown, and a nose stud are on the figure.

The Goddess on the figure is exciting because she doesn't have a mouth, which stands for Mother Earth. Along with the images of Ganesh, Hanuman, and Goddess Annapurna, there are statues of other Hindu gods. The temple remains open every day except Monday, and priests usually hold aartis in the morning and evening.

The best time to visit the temple is during a local holiday, like Navaratri. There will be special ceremonies and rituals during the nine days of Navaratri. A lot of music events will also be set up.

The best time to visit Mumbai is usually in the winter. It can be hard to get around in the summer because it's hot and humid. The monsoon season has strong winds and a lot of rain.

That's why most people stay away during the wet season as well. Winter is nice and cool. Navaratri is also celebrated in the winter. Winter lasts from October to March.
