The Mani Bhavan is in the tree-lined streets of Gamdevi Mumbai. It is famous for being the home of the great leader Mahatma Gandhi in Mumbai. The Mani Bhavan is a simple Gujarati home in downtown Mumbai.

It is a two-story house with a retro look. It once belonged to Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri, a famous gem merchant who supported the Indian National Congress. This historic site is one of the places to visit in Mumbai, attracting history and architecture enthusiasts alike.

Mahatma Gandhi's Connection with Mani Bhavan

Mahatma Gandhi's close ties with Mani Bhavan make it one of the few important places people remember. People call Mani Bhavan, where Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1934 AD. In 1921, while living here, he went on a four-day fast to bring peace back to Mumbai. Revashankar Jhaveri owned this house.

He was a member of the Indian National Congress and a friend of Mahatma Gandhi. This is the house where Gandhiji started the Non-Cooperation, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi, and Khilafat activities. The Gandhi Smarak Nidhi took over the building in 1955 to preserve it as a tribute to Gandhi.

Exhibits and Collections

•    The different exhibits of the museum are viewed within various rooms. The institution possesses a library, an auditorium and Mahatma Gandhi's bedroom and an area displaying figurines of his life stages, a picture gallery, a terrace completely devoted to its purpose, a research centre, and a souvenir shop.

•    The Mani Bhavan library constitutes almost forty thousand volumes and journals that describe the Gandhian school of thought, freedom movements, Mahatma Gandhi's life, and other subjects. There are also several books that are no more printed and available in the libraries.

•    Theater: The Theater on the first floor of Mani Bhavan shows short films and talks by Mahatma Gandhi to visitors. The study institute also uses the theater as a seminar or conference room for various events.

The Bhavan Sangrahalaya and the Gandhiji Smarak Nidhi, Mumbai, occasionally organize many talks, seminars, and events here. Many Mumbai tour packages include Mani Bhavan as a key destination for those interested in India's freedom struggle.

Significance in India's Freedom Struggle

Mani Bhavan in Mumbai was important for Mahatma Gandhi's political work from 1917 to 1934. He used this old house as his office in the city. Leaders planned many important movements here, including the Non-Cooperation, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, and Khilafat movements.

For people interested in history, this icon is still an important place to see when learning about India's fight for independence.
