The Taraporewala Aquarium in Mumbai is the oldest aquarium in India and one of the most popular places to visit in Mumbai. Many families from the area come here with their children, and many kids go here on school trips.

More than 100 species of fish and sea creatures, including sharks, seahorses, and turtles, are found here. Freshwater, saltwater, and tropical fish have been imported from around the world for this exhibition. Visitors to the gallery walk through a glass tube with fish and water plants on exhibit along the edges.

History and Importance

The Taraporewala Aquarium in Mumbai was inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, in the year 1951. The cost incurred in this water show amounted to approximately ?8,000,000. A Parsi donor named D. B. Taraporewala helped to add a sum of ?2,000,000 towards it. That is the reason why this tank was named after him. From the remodeling of the aquarium, there has been added a show in a glass tube measuring 12 feet long in the year 2013.

An aquarium visit is part of many Mumbai tour packages, making it a beautiful attraction for the marine life lover.

Visitors can see various sea life from the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean at the aquarium. Inside the tank, a room displays fossils, preserved fish in bottles, and rare seashells.

Best Time to Visit

It can be too hot in Mumbai in the summer. It's also not a good time to visit during the rainy season. So, October through March is the best time to visit Mumbai and the Taraporewala Aquarium. Compared to last time, the weather is cooler and better for the tour. Also, try to come during the week to avoid busy times.
