Sri Babul Nath Temple is on a small hillock at the far end of Marine Drive at Girgaum Chowpatty in Mumbai. It is the oldest temple located in this city and a very important place for pilgrims. Devotees from far and wide, locally as well, congregate here. Devotees dedicated the temple to Lord Shiva, and it holds great spiritual significance. Over time, it became covered and was eventually lost, but people later rediscovered it.

It stands roughly 1,000 feet high and provides breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea. Devotees enjoy the calm atmosphere and the beautiful city view. Many visitors flock to the temple on Mondays and during the Mahashivratri festival, making it a serene and spiritually enriching places to visit in Mumbai.

History and Significance

The temple gradually got buried and faded from memory over time. In the 18th century, people rediscovered the idols and uncovered five original deities — the main Shiva Linga, Ganesh, Hanuman, Parvati, and one more. They placed the first four idols in the temple. They immersed the fifth idol in the sea because it broke during excavation.

Hindu merchants and the Gujarati community began supporting the temple in 1780 CE. By 1890 CE, Gujarati merchants contributed to building an enormous temple. In 1900, they added a tall spire to this sacred temple of Lord Shiva. However, a lightning strike damaged the spire in the 1960s.

Architectural Style of Sri Babul Nath Temple
