Maharaja ki Chhatri is stationed near Jaipur, Rajasthan. The word, ‘Chhatri’ is a Hindi word that means ‘Umbrella’. The Maharaja ki Chhatri is located at a distance of 7 km from Jaipur station as well as from the famous fortress, Amer Fort.

This amazing and royal place is also very popular as a ‘Gaitor tomb’. And the proper location is in the city, has bounded by walls. Also, the area is famous as Brahmapuri. That has placed at the foothills of Nahargarh on the way to Jaipur-Amer road.

The Maharaja Ki Chhatri/ Gaitor is the burial ground for the Raja and Maharajas of Rajasthan. Believing the legends, there is a belief that the name, ‘Gaitor’ has emerged as a result of the wrong pronunciation of ‘Gaye ka Thor’. That means that the resting place for all those souls that left the earth.

Regal memorials (Cenotaphs) had constructed over the burial ground in order to give the departed soul the richness of royalty. And the designs that has carved out of each cenotaph are the results of the real taste of the Maharajas.

The architecture of the Maharaja ki Chhatri/ Gaitor, Jaipur

The architectural style of the Chhatri is the perfect blend of Hindu and Islamic architecture. The memorials have structured as the open canopy that has decorated with beautiful arch-shaped domes that are standing with the support of the richly sculpted pillars.

Remarkable mastery of kings like Maharaja Pratap Singh, Madho Singh II, and Jai Singh II are some to name a few who were buried here. The decoration of the Chhatri gives the royal tastes of the kings.

One of the most impressive cenotaphs is of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II that was constructed with white marble with a dome on the top and backed by 20 beautifully carved pillars.

The place gives you such a stunning and wide-angle view of the whole Jaipur city. Places of significance such as Jal Mahal and Man Sarovar Lake are clearly visible from the Gaitor. The place is not really crowded as compared to the other tourist spot and is the perfect place to spent time if you are a peace seeker.
