History of High Altitude Zoo
In Nainital, the idea of protecting endangered species, biodiversity, and wildlife first emerged in 1972. The same idea led to the preservation of a suitable biosphere in 1974. The Nainital Zoo was founded in 1984 and opened to the public officially on June 1, 1995.
From 2001 to 2011, the zoo was the home to the sole Siberian Tiger in India after being saved from Darjeeling. G. B. Pant High Altitude is the official name of the Nainital Zoo. Bharat Ratna Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant gave it to it. The Bharat Ratna Pt. G. B. Pant High Altitude Management Society has managed the Nainital Zoo since March 2022.
