St John Wilderness Church is the oldest and best church in the hilltown of Mallital, Nainital. It is next to the High Court of Uttarakhand. The church features stunning stained glass windows and Neo-Gothic architecture. Beautiful pine and deodar trees surround it as it stands atop a hill. A must explore places to visit in Nainital for History lovers and those seeking solitude, visit the colonial church.

The St. John Wilderness Church is devoted to St. John the Baptist and bears the name of a bishop from Kolkata who lived here most of his life. The church is a contemplative setting, removed from the clamor of daily life, thanks to its gentle aura and divine tranquility. The building's stunning architecture is the icing on the cake.

History of St John Wilderness Church

This church bears the name of Bishop Daniel Wilson, who laid its foundation in 1844 in Calcutta (now Kolkata). According to folklore, Bishop Wilson's infirmity forced him to spend his visit in an incomplete hut at the edge of the nearby forest. Because the bishop had to spend much time living in the forest wilderness, the church was named St. John in the Wilderness.

Jim Corbett, the well-known naturalist and hunter, was a devoted church member and frequently attended services—a must-be exploring place among Nainital tour packages

Architecture

The primary characteristics of the Wilderness Church, Nainital, are:
• Its exquisite Neo-Gothic architecture.
• Towering deodar and pine trees.
• Heavenly atmosphere.
• Stained glass windows.

Since it's one of the oldest structures, architects often visit this church to study Neo-Gothic design. A cemetery on the back side of the chapel honoring those who perished in the fatal landslide in 1880. A brass memorial with their names on it is located on the church grounds.

The St. John in the Wilderness Church takes its name from one of the most well-known churches in the country, located in North California. Both the building and the name are comparable.

The church's heavenly aura allows people to connect with themselves and go within for answers to life's mysteries. Attending the confessional sessions at St. John in the Wilderness church is highly recommended. They save you from unnecessary tension and load and strengthen your bonds from the inside out.
