History
The historical Fort in Chandragiri, close to Tirupati, is very popular. It came into existence in the 11th century. The Yadavaraya Dynasty ruled the city for about three hundred years. In 1367, it was taken over by the masters of Vijayanagar. During Saluva Narasimha Rayalu, it became well known.
The Vijayanagar Empire moved their capital to Chandragiri when the Golconda sultans attacked Penukonda. It was their fourth city. Lately, In 1646, the Fort was added to the land of Golconda. It then fell under the control of Mysore and then the British.
The Fort is on a giant rock 183 metres above sea level. Solid walls and a ditch around the southern side of the hill keep anyone from entering. The palace of the Raja Mahal is now a museum of archaeology. The house is one of the best examples of Vijayanagara-style buildings.
