Srikalahasti

History of Temple 

This holy town's past is linked to that of the Srikalahasti temple, its most famous building. The temple was built during the Pallava era and later improved by the Chola kings.

It is believed that Sri Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara country built the beautiful gopuram over 120 feet high at the temple's entrance in the 1600s. The name of the temple town comes from three gods: Sri, which means "spider," Kala, which means "snake," and Hasti, which means "elephant." These gods all worshipped Lord Shiva and reached nirvana here.
